Classroom hours depend on where you take the course
Utah's classroom-hour requirement isn't one number — it depends on which kind of school teaches the course.
- Commercial or private driving school: 18 hours
- Public high school: 27 hours
- Online / home-study course: 30 hours
Behind-the-wheel and observation
Every path also requires 6 hours behind the wheel with a certified instructor.
Observation hours are not required by Utah state law for commercial or private schools, though many include them anyway as part of the package. High schools do require observation as part of their curriculum.
The 40-hour practice log
Separately from the course, every teen driver needs 40 hours of supervised practice driving with a parent or guardian before the road test, 10 of them after sunset.
